Matthew Henson was African American Explorer. At the age of 12 he became a cabin boy for a merchant ship and he traveled the world. He was taught to read and write by the Captain who took him under his wing. It was after this Captain’s death that Henson returned to America. He met Robert Peary who was intrigued by his sea experience and made him First man for all his expeditions. Most famous being the 1st to reach the North Pole. It is believed that Henson was actually the first as Peary had sent him out to scout with the Inuits of the team. They certainly didn’t tell the story like this in school! 🧐
